It's hard
to keep Cathe Jones from doodling. When her hands are curled
up in a strange dislocated heap, holding a rat, or cuddling
a chinchilla, she still manages to scribble crafted drawings
onto a nearby scrap of paper. From the time she was five,
Cathe has won awards for her art work, and
she continues creating using any and all media available to
her.
Cathe's
art training began during her years as a scholarship
student at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts
Boston youth program. Here she sculpted, painted, and oftentimes
invented. Using her portfolio, Jones found herself as an early
admitted student in Massachusett's College of Art.
Because money was scarce, and she had left high school too
early to receive a scholarship, she ended up taking a few
semesters off to join the military. Despite her sabbatical,
she maintained a painting studio, and during her years as
a service member, managed to create enough work to show at
galleries in Newport News, Virginia.
MassArt
gladly accepted her back into the Interrelated Media
program, and she continued her efforts using computers, music,
and dance. During her third year there, she met Ed Emshwiller,
the noted animation and video artist, who suggested she finish
school early and enter California Institute of the
Arts under his mentorship. She studied with genius,
and animation hero, Jules Engel. And her
advisor was equally talented, and magnificent, Christine
Panushka.
Soon,
her friend and fellow animator, Jen Howard,
the most amazing model maker in motion pictures, rescued Cathe
from a part-time job serving as Porky Pig at Magic Mountain.
Boss Films, the company run by Academy Award
Winning effects artist, Richard Edlund, hired
her on. She learned on the job, and was able to use the lessons
to continue on in work on Clio Award winning commercials,
Academy Award winning pictures, and, she even supported effects
crews on a variety of projects in Mexico and Canada.
Aside from film and video works, computer animations, and
performances, Jones was a featured ice sculptor for Boston's
First Night Festivals for several years. Her ice work continued
on in shows in Minneapolis, Chicago, and even Orlando, Florida.
Revelation/Transition,
an animation that won several independent film awards for
writing, served as a portfolio piece that allowed Cathe to
work on rock videos and to serve on faculty at New
Mexico Highlands University, San Francisco
State University, and California State University,
Sacramento.
