The
orange pumpkin sitting at the far left was dancing and
singing in her first show at the age of six. The other
girls in the picture ended up being Miss Massachusetts,
Miss New England, and other Misses or another. Cathe Jones?
She ended up being Porky Pig at Magic Mountain,
still dancing around. Funny how things work out?
After
recovering from surgery on her throat in 1990, she was
told she'd never be able to perform comedy, much less
sing. Four years later, Cathe ended up in San
Francisco State University studying jazz vocals
in their prestigious program. After a two year sabbatical
from music in the mid-1990's, Cathe ended up in a few
bands, and worked doing backing vocals
on other artists' projects. By 2005, she had nearly two
dozen backing vox gigs.
In
late 2004, Cathe started writing an album of "new
jazz standards" which she hoped to record the following
year. Because of a disabling
illness, she put the project
on hold. The fifteen song album is due for the studio
in 2007. Some lyrics are to
appear on the CatheJones.com website.
In March 2007, the multitalented artist will join her
husband, not as a performer, but as his booking and publicity
assistant, during his SXSW showcase.
Ms.
Jones cites Frank Zappa, Ella Fitzgerald, Nelly McKay,
Kate Bush, Miles Davis, and Henry Rollins, and myriad
performers as her influences. As a graduate student, she
befriended such luminaries as Ravi Coltrane, and world
class bassists, Nedra Wheeler and Kevin Wyatt. During
her years as a performer for Second City, Santa Monica,
her unique song stylings were often highlighted in showcases.
There was nothing that would let her live up to the doctor's
expectations of being unable to sing. When the album is
mixed, MP3's will be available to downoad. (Cathe is pictured
with Australian musician/actor Tony Simcoe before one
of his concerts.)
